Media must report judicial cases carefully, perception often replaces evidence

TIRANA, June 29 – Director of the School of Magistrates Arben Rakipi said media and the justice system must maintain a balanced relationship during the National Conference on the interaction between justice and media.

Meanwhile, he said the justice system must remain open to the public. He stressed transparency and institutional communication as key elements for public trust. He said justice cannot stay isolated from citizens. He added that courts function as a public service funded by taxpayers. He noted that limited communication increases speculation, misinformation and distrust.

In addition, Rakipi warned about “parallel judgment”. He said media reports, suspect identification and arrest images can shape public perception. He said this perception can replace evidence and due process. He added that technology increases these risks. Information spreads quickly. Verification often lags behind. He noted that investigative material may appear before court procedures.

However, he said media reporting remains essential in public interest cases. It strengthens transparency and accountability in the justice system. He stressed careful, balanced and fact-based reporting. He said public information must not turn into public conviction.

Finally, Rakipi said media freedom and responsible reporting must work together.
