Prime Minister Edi Rama rejected claims that Albania is facing a crisis of trust and ruled out resignation while protests continued over a planned tourism development project.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, he described the demonstrations as a clear expression of democracy and free speech. He said citizens actively exercise their right to protest and voice their concerns.
Moreover, he defended the government’s policy of attracting foreign investment, emphasizing that economic development remains a national priority. He denied that the project would privatize public spaces and rejected such claims as inaccurate.
Regarding environmental legislation, he explained that the government revised certain legal provisions without changing the core principles of the law. He stressed that the reforms remain aligned with European standards.
In addition, he warned about the growing influence of social media algorithms and misinformation, arguing that sensational content spreads more widely than factual reporting.
Furthermore, Rama dismissed calls for his resignation, stating that voters had given him a mandate to complete Albania’s EU accession process. He said resignation “has not been, is not, and will not be an option.”
However, he acknowledged that protests are part of a democratic system and said the government must continue to listen to citizens’ concerns.
