Kanali i Setës: A Remarkable Feat of Folk Engineering in the Lurë Mountains

Kanali i Setës offers visitors a unique mix of nature, history and human ingenuity in Dibër. The journey begins near Çidhen, on the road to Lurë National Park. The trail follows the mountains and reveals spectacular views of the Setë River canyon.

The canal runs along the steep slopes of the Gjallica e Lurës mountains. In some sections, visitors must use ropes and steel cables to cross safely.

However, the most impressive part of the journey is the canal itself. Local residents built it in the 1960s under extremely difficult conditions.

Engineer Gani Tuçepi designed the project. Construction began on March 1, 1967. Thousands of local men and women helped build the canal with simple tools such as shovels, picks, chisels and ropes.

The canal carries water from the Setë River toward the areas of Çidhën, Dardhë, Reç and Sinë. It continues to serve as a remarkable example of traditional engineering.

Today, the canal has also become an attraction for adventure travelers. The main trail stretches for about three kilometers. Visitors who continue through the canyon can cover more than 12 kilometers.

Moreover, the area offers spectacular natural scenery. The Setë Canyon features steep rock walls, clear water and hidden caves.

The nearby villages also preserve important cultural heritage. Visitors can explore old houses, local traditions and stories connected with the Kastriot family and Skanderbeg.

Another highlight is the Sopanikë Waterfall. A marked trail with ropes and wooden steps leads visitors to the waterfall. The water flows through a karst cave and forms small natural pools along the river.

As a result, the Setë area offers a powerful combination of nature, adventure and history. The canal remains a lasting reminder of what local communities achieved with determination, simple tools and remarkable skill.
