TIRANA, August 20 – The United States has renewed its call for Kosova’s political leaders to cooperate on forming institutions in line with the Constitution and Constitutional Court decisions.
A US State Department spokesperson told Radio Free Europe that political leaders should work together to overcome the institutional deadlock. The spokesperson said the continuing crisis was costing Kosova opportunities and urged leaders to prioritise progress and stability for all citizens.
The latest appeal follows a similar call from the US Embassy in Prishtina on August 12. Meanwhile, Kosova’s new parliament remains unconstituted after the June 7 election.
The inaugural session began on August 6. MPs took their oaths but did not proceed to elect a speaker. Albin Kurti, leader of the Self-Determination Movement, requested additional time for talks with political parties. The session later resumed on August 8, but MPs again failed to elect a speaker.
Since then, the process has remained blocked. Parliament’s acting speaker, Avni Dehari, said he would call another session after the parties reached a political agreement.
At the same time, the Democratic Party of Kosova and the Alliance have demanded that MPs continue the session without waiting for an agreement. The European Union has also urged the parties to resolve the crisis quickly.
Under the Growth Plan, Kosova has access to €882.6 million in grants and favourable loans through 2027. The funding depends on progress in implementing 111 reform steps. The International Monetary Fund has also warned that the prolonged deadlock has slowed reform progress and limited access to external financing.
