Cybersecurity during summer holidays: Tips for safer travel

TIRANA, August 20 – Smartphones play a central role during summer travel. People use them for bookings, tickets, documents, photos, maps, payments and personal or work accounts. The National Cyber Security Authority recommends several measures to protect devices, accounts and data. Before departure, travellers should update operating systems and applications. They should also activate multi-factor authentication and use strong, unique passwords. Backups can protect important photos, documents and other data. Travellers should also activate remote location, locking and wiping functions.

Meanwhile, travellers should check online bookings and tourist offers carefully. Very cheap offers, fake hotel or airline websites and urgent payment requests can signal fraud. Users should check website addresses before entering personal or banking information. Public Wi-Fi networks at airports, hotels and tourist venues also require caution. Travellers should verify the network name with staff before connecting. For banking and other sensitive activities, they should use mobile data or another trusted connection. The authority also advises against using unknown public USB charging ports when possible.

In addition, travellers should limit the information they share online. Real-time posts can reveal locations, hotels or empty homes. Travel documents can also contain names, booking numbers, barcodes and QR codes. Users should check privacy settings before sharing such information. They should also check QR code destinations before entering credentials or making payments.

If a phone goes missing, users should activate remote location and locking immediately. They should change critical passwords when necessary and contact their mobile operator about the SIM card. Workers should also notify their organisation’s information technology or cybersecurity team if the device provides access to work systems.
