PM Rama: Albania does not need veto power to join European table

TIRANA, September 5 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania does not necessarily need veto power to take part in European processes and discussions. He spoke about Albania’s European Union perspective and the rise of nationalist trends in several European countries.

Speaking at the “Intelligence on the World, Europe and Italy” Forum in Cernobbio, Rama said gradual integration was the best way to bring Albania closer to the European Union.

He said Albania should first join the common market and take part in European university programmes, student exchanges and other key initiatives. Rama also questioned whether some European capitals would support granting Albania veto power by 2027. He said Albania did not need such powers to have a seat at the European table.

Rama also raised concerns about growing nationalist trends in several European countries. He said these trends focused on national interests rather than a common European future. According to Rama, such developments were disappointing for Albania and ran counter to the idea of a united Europe.
