PM Rama Endorses Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General: “A Woman of Exceptional Calibre”

Prime Minister Edi Rama has confirmed Albania’s support for diplomat Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In a post on X, the prime minister described her candidacy as an opportunity for a fresh start for the UN at a time when the organisation faces numerous challenges and its credibility on the international stage is being questioned.

Rama said he knows the diplomat personally and had the opportunity to appreciate her abilities during Albania’s tenure as an elected member of the UN Security Council.

According to the prime minister, Nusseibeh stands out for her knowledge of international politics, intelligence, and ability to bridge different positions across cultures and perspectives.

“The nomination of Lana Nusseibeh by the United Arab Emirates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations offers a fresh start that the UN community cannot afford to miss, and Albania is honoured to fully support her candidacy,” Rama wrote.

The prime minister also praised the diplomat’s experience and commitment, describing her profile as well-suited to the challenges facing the international organisation.

In his message, Rama also highlighted the possibility of a woman leading the UN, describing it as a hopeful prospect for the institution’s future.

“After so many men at the helm, I cannot think of a better hope for the United Nations than a woman of this calibre,” the prime minister concluded.
