Union of Albanian Journalists reacts to closure of Euronews Albania’s Instagram account: Meta must provide explanations

The Union of Albanian Journalists (UGSH) has reacted to the problems affecting access to Euronews Albania’s official Instagram page, describing the situation as an alarm for freedom of communication and access to information.

In a public statement, UGSH said that the inability to access the media outlet’s Instagram page constitutes a serious concern regarding the media’s right to communicate and report through social media platforms.

According to the Union of Albanian Journalists, similar cases have also been reported in recent days by other users and journalists, who have encountered the “user not found” message when attempting to access their accounts.

UGSH has called on Albania’s Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), in communication with Meta, to clarify the reasons for the disruption of access and determine whether it is a technical issue or a deliberate restriction.

“It is essential to publicly clarify the truth of the matter and where this blocking action is coming from,” the Union said in its statement.

UGSH has also called on other media outlets and journalists who have encountered similar problems on Instagram or other social media platforms to report the cases and seek explanations.

The Union of Albanian Journalists has also called on the authorities responsible for combating cybercrime to treat these cases as complaints and indications warranting investigation, in cooperation with Meta.

According to UGSH, the growing number of reported cases, and particularly the disruption of professional media outlets’ access to social media platforms, “cannot under any circumstances be considered a coincidence.”

In conclusion, UGSH called on Meta to intervene to restore access and provide transparency regarding the reasons for the restrictions, while urging Albanian authorities to respond urgently.
