TIRANA, September 5 – The US Embassy and EU Ambassador to Albania Sofia Moreira de Sousa have paid tribute to Mother Teresa, highlighting her humanitarian legacy and message of service, solidarity and inclusion.
Moreira de Sousa recalled one of Mother Teresa’s best-known messages, saying that people may not all do great things but can do small things with great love. She said the message has particular meaning in Albania, given Mother Teresa’s Albanian heritage. Her legacy, the ambassador added, should inspire people to serve with humanity, support others and protect dignity and solidarity. She linked these values to principles at the foundation of the European Union.
The US Embassy also honored Mother Teresa’s legacy. It said she dedicated her life to the poor, the sick and those who had been forgotten. The embassy said her example showed that greatness comes through service rather than status. It also quoted President Donald Trump, who said Mother Teresa “represents the best in all of us.”
Mother Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis at a Mass in St. Peter’s Square on September 4, 2016. More than 120,000 people attended the ceremony, held during the Jubilee of Mercy, including many Albanians. The canonization recognized two miracles attributed to her intercession after her death in 1997.
