20.1% of Albania’s population is under the age of 18. This means that around one in five residents of the country belongs to this age group. Compared with other countries in the region, Albania is in a relatively favorable position. Montenegro leads with 21.8% of its population under the age of 18, while North Macedonia has the same percentage as Albania, at 20.1%.
On the other hand, the share of the young population is lower in Serbia, where children under the age of 18 make up 17.2% of the population, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the figure stands at 15.9%. These figures show that countries in the region are not facing demographic changes in the same way, while declining birth rates and population ageing remain significant challenges for many societies.
Globally, 28 of the 30 countries with the highest percentage of people under the age of 18 are in Africa.
According to the United Nations, which compiles these statistics, the percentage of the population under the age of 18 is one of the indicators that helps provide an understanding of a country’s demographic structure. It shows how young a society is and is directly linked to future needs for education, healthcare services, employment, and social policies.
