Rama: Albania receives its strongest-ever EU progress assessment, membership prospects more realistic than ever

Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania had received its strongest assessment yet in the European Commission’s annual Progress Report.

He described the report as another source of pride for the country and an encouraging step towards its historic goal of joining the European Union.

“Another meaningful and encouraging report card from the European Commission. Another step forward towards our historic goal of joining Europe,” Rama said.

However, he stressed that Albania still faces many challenges. The country also has less time to complete the reforms required by its ambitious EU negotiation timetable.

Rama added that the positive assessment does not make everyday problems in Albania any less important. He said the government and parliamentary majority would continue to focus on addressing these concerns.

On the contrary, he argued, the Commission’s positive evaluation should encourage the authorities to do more and improve their performance.

“The moment is optimal,” Rama said.

He also stressed that the EU door remains open and that Albania’s chances of membership have never been more realistic.

According to the prime minister, Albania must not allow political divisions, resentment and jealousy to stand in the way of its European future.

“Keep your head high and move forward, Albania,” Rama concluded.
