Kruja Castle remains one of Albania’s leading cultural tourism destinations. Every day, it attracts both domestic and international visitors.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared footage Monday morning showing “daily life at Kruja Castle.” The images show tourists exploring one of Albania’s most important historical heritage sites.
The castle stands on a rocky hill and covers around 2.5 hectares. Its fortified walls include nine towers. According to the National Tourism Agency, the fortification dates back to the 5th and 6th centuries. During Skanderbeg’s era, the castle became a major symbol of Albanian resistance to the Ottoman Empire.
Inside the complex, visitors can explore the National Museum “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu.” The museum offers one of the main stops for those who want to learn more about Albania’s history and its National Hero.
The museum features several pavilions and thematic areas. Historical objects, documents, weapons, facsimiles and other exhibits tell the story of Albania and its resistance during the 15th century. The collections include ceramic, bronze, iron and copper objects, icons, manuscripts, a bell from 1462 and original 15th-century swords.
Moreover, the museum complex covers different periods of Albanian history. These include Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages, the Albanian Principalities, the Ottoman occupation and the national resistance. Visitors can also see Skanderbeg’s chancellery, a library, the Hall of Princes and other exhibition spaces.
Meanwhile, the castle also houses the National Ethnographic Museum. The museum occupies a traditional Toptani family house built in 1764. Its exhibits showcase Albanian lifestyles, crafts and traditions through everyday objects and handmade works.
Visitors can also explore Kruja’s Old Bazaar. The cobbled street leads directly toward the historic complex. Traditional shops line the bazaar and offer handcrafted products made from wood, copper and silver, as well as textiles and carpets.
Kruja’s appeal as a cultural tourism destination comes from its rich historical heritage. The castle, museums and Old Bazaar combine with panoramic views of the city and surrounding plains. Together, they make Kruja one of Albania’s key cultural tourism destinations.
