FM Hoxha: Kosovo, an independent state and should be recognized; Regional cooperation remains a major priority

Speaking at the “Balkans Meet in Trieste” conference, Hoxha also addressed Albania’s positions on Kosovo,  stressing that Albania considers it an independent state that should receive international recognition.

“We have fundamental differences with Serbia over Kosovo,” he said. “Kosovo is an independent state and should be recognized.”

At the same time, Hoxha called for international support to strengthen Kosovo’s institutions, democracy and sovereignty. He also addressed Russia’s war against Ukraine. Hoxha said Albania considers Russia the aggressor and supports sanctions against Moscow.

“We must do everything possible to help Ukraine defend itself,” he said. “This is not only about defending Ukraine. It is also about defending Europe.”

Nevertheless, Hoxha stressed that Albania and Serbia share the same region and should explore areas where they can cooperate.

“Having differences is one thing. Exploring every opportunity for cooperation is another,” he said.

He described Albania’s relations with Serbia as pragmatic and said regional cooperation remains a major priority. Hoxha also condemned the glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić in Serbia. He said the EU has taken a similar position because such acts insult the victims and undermine reconciliation.
