Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha held a press conference on Monday, speaking about his several-day visit to the United States. During his remarks, Berisha described the Republican midterm election convention as the most impressive convention organized in the US.
Speaking about the similarities between his trip 35 years ago and his visit this month, he stressed that on both occasions he traveled as the leader of the largest opposition party. According to Berisha, during both trips he sought the support of the US administration and the Albanian diaspora to bring down the government.
“Following my return from the US, where, together with the chairman of the Republican Party, we took part as members of the IDU delegation in the Republican midterm election convention, along with the secretary for international relations, the organizational secretary, the party’s vice-chairman and the chairwoman of the LDG, we attended the most impressive convention organized in the US.
And when I say in the US, that naturally also means on our planet, because no one has greater electoral and organizational imagination and flair when it comes to conventions than the two major parties, and in this case specifically the party currently in power in the US, the Republican Party.
By way of introduction, strangely enough, although this trip took place 35 years after my first journey — and, if you like, you could even say light-years apart — it had three similarities with it.
First, on my first trip and on this trip, I traveled to the US as the leader of the opposition, or of the largest opposition party. That is the truth.
Second, on that trip and on this one, I went with one main purpose: to seek the support of the US administration and our diaspora — back then, to overthrow the totalitarian communist dictatorship, and this time, to overthrow an authoritarian dictatorship based on drugs, crime and the theft of Albanians.
Third, on that trip, when my late friend Gramoz Pashko and I went to attend the ceremony marking the restoration of diplomatic relations between Albania and the US, the rumor mill and the entire establishment were enraged against us.
They hurled at Gramoz Pashko and me every accusation of betrayal, being agents, and so on and so forth, but this time there were no fewer.
The truth is that in Colonel Buendía’s Macondo, this time, to tell the truth, because of the greater number of media outlets, there were even more,” he said.
