EU Calls for Restraint Following Verdict Against Former KLA Leaders

The European Union has urged all sides and actors in Kosovo and the region to show restraint following the verdict against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.

EU spokesperson Guillaume Mercier told Radio Free Europe that the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office must carry out their mandates without interference.

“Justice must take its course. This is particularly important for the victims. The authorities must ensure the safety of all communities and residents across Kosovo,” Mercier said.

Meanwhile, the EU said it “takes note” of the first-instance verdict. The bloc also said the Kosovo Specialist Chambers administer justice through “fair, impartial and independent” proceedings.

The EU said the proceedings follow the principle of individual criminal responsibility.

Mercier also stressed that the convicted individuals can appeal the verdict. They can take their cases before a separate panel of Appeal judges.
