US Embassy warns of violence risk as protests continue in Tirana

The US Embassy in Tirana has urged American citizens to avoid protest areas, warning that demonstrations could escalate into violence and disrupt traffic and public services.

In an official security alert, the embassy said protests continue in central Tirana and near government institutions. Some demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of incendiary devices, stones being thrown and property damage.

The embassy also warned that further demonstrations could take place in Tirana and other Albanian cities in the coming days.

Meanwhile, protests could spread to surrounding streets, prompting a stronger police presence, traffic disruptions, road diversions and closures. People near demonstration sites could also face exposure to tear gas, fireworks, incendiary devices and rubber projectiles.

As a precaution, the embassy has advised its staff to stay away from all protest areas.

The alert also warns of possible further closures or reduced public services in Tirana, including public transport and government offices.

The embassy has urged American citizens to remain vigilant, follow local media coverage and comply with instructions from Albanian authorities and law enforcement agencies.

It also recommends avoiding demonstrations, staying aware of their surroundings and limiting distractions while moving through public areas. In addition, citizens should keep an emergency or exit plan ready and maintain a low profile.
