Walker on former Kosova Liberation Army leaders’ sentences: Where was the European Union when Serbs mistreated Kosovar Albanians?

US diplomat William Walker has reacted to the verdict by the Kosova Specialist Chambers against four former Kosova Liberation Army leaders. The former ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe described the sentences as a tragic day for Kosova.

Walker questioned the European Union’s response before the war. He asked where the bloc had been when, he said, Serbs subjected Kosovar Albanians to severe mistreatment. Walker said Europe offered little beyond statements. He credited NATO, Madeleine Albright and Wesley Clark with taking serious action. He also referred to rape and cruel treatment.

Walker said the verdict would have a serious impact on how the international community views Kosova. He described the decision as a very difficult and painful moment and said he was deeply disappointed by it. Walker also criticized the judges and lawyers handling the case, saying they knew little about Kosova.
