TIRANA, April 2 – The Albanian government will double monthly payments for around 11,000 children with disabilities. It will also recognise social and health insurance for about 14,000 caregivers and assistants. Officials announced the measures on World Autism Day during an event in Berat.
Health and Social Protection Minister Evis Sala presented the initiative at the “PAK Art në Pedonale” [PAK Art on the Promenade] activity. She said the government is finalising a support package for children with disabilities. The measure includes children with autism spectrum conditions, visual impairment, tetraplegia, and Down syndrome. She also announced the National Action Plan for Persons with Disabilities for 2026–2030.
Sala said the plan reflects both a political commitment and a public obligation. She stressed that the reform marks a step forward in Albania’s European Union integration path. According to her, the measures aim to strengthen social inclusion and improve living conditions for affected families.
Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu highlighted the recognition of insurance contributions for caregivers. She said many caregivers provide full-time support and often lack social protection. The government aims to ensure dignified pensions and access to health coverage for them.
Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Ervin Demo stressed the role of municipalities in implementing these policies. He called for stronger coordination between central and local institutions. He said local authorities must increase engagement and funding to improve service quality.
Officials said the measures translate European integration commitments into concrete action. They aim to provide direct support for children with disabilities and their caregivers across Albania.
