Albania to sign Defence Bank agreement with 9 NATO allies in Ankara

TIRANA, July 7 – Albania is expected to join 9 NATO allies in signing an agreement to establish the Defence Bank during the Alliance’s summit in Ankara.

The new financial mechanism will support investments in the defence industry, military technologies, and the strengthening of member states’ defence capabilities.

From Ankara, RTSH reporter Denada Shkodrani tells that the initiative represents one of the most important recent developments in Euro-Atlantic security. The bank aims to facilitate funding for strategic defence projects, innovation, military equipment production, and army modernisation.

The 10 founding countries will sign the agreement at noon on July 7, alongside the summit’s main events. Prime Minister Edi Rama is attending the meeting with his wife, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Defence, the head of the State Intelligence Service, and the director of the state-owned arms production company KAYO.

Meanwhile, Albania’s role as a founding member comes as Tirana increases its defence commitments and seeks to host the NATO Summit in 2027.

The Ankara summit will also address higher defence spending, long-term support for Ukraine, strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, new military technologies, and cooperation on innovation. Leaders from NATO’s 32 member states are attending, along with partners including Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
