Albania’s history comes to life through photography in a special exhibition at Rinia Park, organized for World Photography Day.
The General Directorate of Archives (DPA), in cooperation with the Tirana Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Agency, presented a collection of photographs by Korçë photographers Vani Burda and Thimi Raci, two pioneers of Albanian photography.
The exhibition captures everyday life in the Korçë region during the 20th century. The photographs, preserved in the DPA’s Photo Library, feature portraits, urban scenes and life in the surrounding areas. Some images come from original glass negatives.
The DPA holds around 10,000 photographs from the Vani Burda and Thimi Raci collection. Its Photo Library preserves around 135,000 original photographs in total.
One collection includes around 41,000 photographs documenting Albania’s political, social and cultural life up to 1944. Another major collection contains around 43,000 photographs from the Italian Luce Institute and the period of fascist occupation.
Beyond their artistic value, the photographs provide direct evidence of Albanian society over the years. They preserve images of people, places and events that form part of the country’s collective memory.
The DPA’s digitization program has made these archives more accessible to the public. It also allows institutions to reproduce the photographs in high resolution while protecting the original materials for the future.
The Rinia Park exhibition brings Albania’s photographic heritage closer to the public. It also highlights photography’s powerful role in preserving and understanding the country’s history.
