Aleksandër Moisiu remembered on his birthday by the Academy of Sciences

TIRANA, April 2 – The Academy of Sciences today commemorated actor Aleksandër Moisiu on his birthday. Moisiu was born on 2 April 1879 in Trieste, Italy, but his family originated from Kavaja. He completed secondary school in Graz, Austria, in 1898. After his father’s death, the family moved to Vienna.

Moisiu briefly enrolled at the Vienna Conservatory but left to follow his passion for acting. He began performing in 1899 at the Burgtheater stage. In 1903, he made a successful debut at the German Theatre in Prague. Two years later, renowned director Max Reinhardt invited him to join his company, allowing Moisiu to showcase his talent in roles such as Oswald in Ibsen’s Ghosts and Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Despite his European and American success, Moisiu maintained strong ties to his roots. His national awareness culminated in formally requesting Albanian citizenship at the height of his global fame. He officially received Albanian citizenship in 1934.

Moisiu stood out in world theatre for his original interpretations, powerful temperament, philosophical depth, lyrical expression, and poetic portrayal of characters. His contributions have left a lasting mark on Albanian stage art and continue to inspire actors and audiences alike.
