Butrint, Byllis and Antigonea Draw International Attention at Archaeological Tourism Fair in Italy

Albania has showcased its rich archaeological heritage at the Mediterranean Exchange of Archaeological Tourism (BMTA) in Paestum, Italy, for the second consecutive year.

The delegation promoted the country’s archaeological sites and cultural tourism potential. It also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and sustainable site management.

Deputy Ministers of Tourism, Culture and Sports Lira Pipa and Marinela Prifti led the delegation. Representatives of national and regional heritage institutions also joined them.

At the Albanian stand, Butrint National Park took centre stage. In cooperation with the Butrint Management Foundation, the delegation highlighted the site’s UNESCO World Heritage status, cultural value and sustainable management model.

Albania also promoted the archaeological parks of Byllis and Antigonea. With support from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the presentation highlighted their potential to attract cultural tourists, boost local economies and create new destinations.

Another highlight was the international panel titled “Cultural Heritage and Cooperation: Partnerships for Shared Development in the Framework of the Pact for the Mediterranean.” The panel brought together senior representatives from Italy, the European Commission, Albania, Egypt and Jordan.

Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Edmondo Cirielli, and AICS Director Marco Riccardo Rusconi opened the discussion.

During the panel, Deputy Ministers Pipa and Prifti presented Albania’s priorities for protecting and promoting its cultural heritage. They also highlighted its role in economic growth, sustainable tourism and regional cooperation.

Representatives from Italy’s Ministry of Culture, the European Commission, Jordan’s Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority and the Grand Egyptian Museum also joined the discussion.

Meanwhile, cooperation between Albania and Italy continues to support archaeological heritage projects. Through AICS, the partnership helps preserve and promote historic sites. It also strengthens institutional capacities and supports cultural tourism.

Albania’s second consecutive participation in BMTA reflects its commitment to promoting its heritage internationally. It also aims to expand partnerships and turn archaeological sites into sustainable opportunities for local communities.
