Costa: European Commission Proposes Closing Three Negotiation Chapters with Albania

The European Commission has proposed closing three negotiation chapters with Albania, according to António Costa.

Costa announced the news during a press conference following the EU–Western Balkans Summit in Tivat.

Furthermore, he praised the progress of Western Balkan countries on their path toward the European Union. He said the enlargement process has gained new and concrete momentum.

“Last week, we held an Intergovernmental Conference with Albania, which opened the next phase of the accession process. In addition, the Commission has proposed closing three negotiation chapters with Albania,” Costa said.

Meanwhile, Costa reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to enlargement. He described the process as a geopolitical investment in peace, security, and prosperity across Europe.

He also stressed that the Western Balkans belong to the future of the European Union. Therefore, he urged countries in the region to use the current momentum to accelerate reforms and advance their integration efforts.

In addition, Costa highlighted the importance of aligning with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. He said this remains a key requirement on the path to membership.

Moreover, he emphasized the value of regional cooperation and good-neighborly relations. According to Costa, both play a crucial role in promoting stability and economic development.

Finally, Costa reaffirmed that the European Union will remain the Western Balkans’ most reliable partner. He stressed that the future of the region is closely linked to the future of the European Union.
