Just days before the major verdict in The Hague concerning the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), their war and that of many other soldiers against Serbian forces has been presented in an exhibition in central Pristina. The exhibition is by Visar Kryeziu, a photographer who worked for numerous international media outlets during the war, particularly the Associated Press. Titled “Diary of a War Photographer,” the exhibition was curated by Eliza Hoxha, a PDK MP and member of the “Freedom Has a Name” platform.
Kryeziu says that through the exhibition, he wanted to highlight the bravery of those who fought for the liberation of Kosovo, presenting the public with images he personally documented during the conflict.
“The idea and purpose of the exhibition was to express support for the just war of the KLA during the trial of the commanders taking place in The Hague, which I believe is an unfair trial, although I am not an expert; I am only a journalist. I was a witness and can be considered a kind of witness to what I saw and experienced, and one of those experiences, for me, was the unparalleled bravery of the men of the Kosovo Liberation Army,” photographer Visar Kryeziu says.
The exhibition depicts KLA soldiers in action in several areas of Kosovo, including two young women saying goodbye to their mother before leaving for war. The photographs also portray the displacement of the civilian population, the end of the war, and the transformation of the KLA into the Kosovo Protection Corps, a process led by Hashim Thaçi.
Kryeziu says he is impressed by the large number of visitors to the exhibition, which opened at the Art Gallery in Pristina. He says interest has been so high that the venue was completely packed during the first days of the exhibition.
“It has been very well received. The Art Gallery building in Pristina has recently reopened, and the attention and beauty it once had have been restored. But I can say that it was overcrowded; we even had a problem because there was not enough air. I thank every single person who came, because you made me feel proud of the work I have done, and I think it was worth it, because there were several sleepless nights,” Kryeziu says.
The exhibition is part of a series of activities organized in Kosovo ahead of the verdict by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in the case of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi, which is expected to be announced next Wednesday.
