“€100 Million to Connect the Mountains with the Sea”: Government Approves “Gateway to the Alps” Project for Shkodër

The Albanian government has approved a new project for the Shkodër region called “Gateway to the Alps.”

Through this project, €100 million in infrastructure investments are planned across the entire region, aiming to give a significant boost to tourism development, from the Alps all the way to the coast of Velipojë.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, announced several key components of the project following the Council of Ministers meeting, highlighting its direct impact on the economic development of the area.

“The program and agreement include several components. The first concerns the rehabilitation of urban squares, the reconstruction of boulevards, and multifunctional centers, providing better public spaces for citizens across the region. Another element involves infrastructure investments in the routes connecting the Velipojë coast, Lake Shkodër, the Buna River, and the areas of Malësia e Madhe and the Alps. Another very important component includes investments in sewage and water supply networks, as well as aspects related to urban transport and tourism infrastructure for managing urban pollution,” Karakaçi said.

According to him, these investments will ensure year-round tourism in the Shkodër region, which offers diverse resources for visitors in every season.

“Through this agreement, for the first time we are creating an integrated corridor between the Alps and the Adriatic coast, thus enabling a full tourism season from winter to summer, staying closer to citizens and improving the overall economic development of the Shkodër region,” the minister emphasized.

The “Gateway to the Alps” project foresees a financing agreement with the European Investment Bank worth €50 million, while another €50 million will be provided by the Albanian government.
