TIRANA, June 1 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania should aim for a higher level of tourism development as the country considers major investment projects such as the one planned in Zvërnec.
Speaking on Monday, Rama said authorities have not yet received the project and have not completed the environmental study. He added that officials will review and present all details once the process reaches that stage. Meanwhile, he pointed to tourism developments in Greece, Montenegro and Croatia as examples of high-end tourism destinations.
The prime minister said Albania benefited from mass tourism in recent years because it increased the country’s international visibility. However, he argued that the country now needs more elite tourism projects that can generate higher revenue and contribute to economic growth. According to Rama, a planned 4-billion-euro investment could create broader economic benefits and support around 10,000 jobs.
In addition, the prime minister said the project could create opportunities for Albanian agriculture. He noted that large tourism developments require significant food supplies and said the investment plan includes cooperation with local farmers and agricultural producers.
Rama also said the project foresees environmental improvements in the area, including lagoon clean-up efforts and new landscaping features. At the same time, he acknowledged that major projects carry risks and said authorities must address those risks throughout the process.
The prime minister said the discussion should focus on Albania’s future development model. He also said the government has no dispute with citizens who choose to protest.
