Gjirokastër Castle Welcomes 161,000 Visitors in Seven Months, Up 13%

Gjirokastër Castle continues to attract growing numbers of visitors. Between January and July 2026, the historic site welcomed 161,274 visitors, marking a 13% increase from the same period last year.

Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja announced the figures. He said the castle continues to attract visitors because of its historical, cultural and architectural value.

Built above Gjirokastër, the centuries-old castle stands as one of Albania’s most important cultural heritage sites. Moreover, it remains a key stop on tourist routes across southern Albania.

Visitors can explore the fortress while enjoying panoramic views of Gjirokastër and the Drinos Valley. As a result, the site combines cultural heritage with the natural landscape.

Meanwhile, the rising number of visitors highlights growing interest in Gjirokastër and its historic attractions. The city is therefore strengthening its position among Albania’s leading destinations for domestic and international tourists.

More broadly, the figures also reflect the growing role of cultural tourism in Albania. Through its historic sites, traditions and architecture, the country continues to offer visitors a closer look at its cultural identity.
