Blendi Gonxhja said the new Archaeological Museum project will meet international standards for preservation, exhibition, and public access.
Speaking in Parliament, Gonxhja answered concerns raised by opposition MP Ina Zhupa over plans to relocate the museum collection to an underground space.
He said the ministry follows international models that combine museum spaces with urban infrastructure. He pointed to examples in Rome, Krakow, and the Louvre Museum.
Gonxhja explained that the Academy of Sciences of Albania first submitted the request. He added that the Albanian Development Fund will supervise procurement and implementation procedures.
The ministry also asked the project team to apply international preservation standards. The plan includes environmental control systems, proper lighting, and security measures for archaeological objects.
Furthermore, Gonxhja stressed that the museum function will remain the project’s main priority. He said the project will protect cultural heritage and promote cultural tourism at the same time.
He also noted that locations near parking areas, stations, terminals, and public squares attract more visitors and improve access for tourists.
Currently, the project remains in its preliminary phase. Authorities have not yet launched a formal public consultation process. However, experts and specialized institutions will join the project during the design phase.
