Greece is increasing efforts to restart talks with Albania on maritime borders.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias will visit Tirana next week for high-level meetings. He will meet Albanian Defense Minister Ermal Nufi and Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The visit aims to revive talks on maritime border delimitation.
In October 2020, Albania and Greece agreed to send the dispute to the International Court of Justice. The process later stalled.
Athens and Tirana now want to move it forward. Greek officials say relations between the two countries remain positive.
The visit also follows Rama’s recent trip to Greece. It comes as Athens continues to support EU integration for Western Balkan countries.
Talks will focus on a formal agreement. The deal would allow both countries to submit the Exclusive Economic Zone dispute for international review.
Albania’s Constitutional Court stopped the process earlier. The issue remained unresolved.
Greek officials now see a new opportunity.
According to sources, President Bajram Begaj is ready to approve the technical talks needed to advance the process.
Both sides still face challenges.
One major issue is Albania’s limited technical capacity for the legal and diplomatic work a case in The Hague requires.
Greek officials said Athens could offer technical support.
More talks are expected in June.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis plans to visit Tirana for a ministerial conference on Ukraine and security in Southeast Europe.
The visit may also include more bilateral talks on Albania’s EU path and regional issues.
Greek officials believe progress on the maritime dispute could strengthen cooperation and support regional stability.
