TIRANA, May 20 – The Peace Board, created to oversee the Gaza ceasefire, will ask the United Nations Security Council to pressure Hamas to disarm, according to AP.
Albania is a member of the Peace Board.
A report scheduled for discussion at the Security Council says Hamas’ refusal to surrender weapons remains the main obstacle to full implementation of the ceasefire agreement. It adds that Gaza reconstruction cannot begin without the disarmament of armed groups and links weapons surrender to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, the creation of a Palestinian civilian administration, and progress toward self-determination and statehood.
Peace Board head Nickolay Mladenov said the ceasefire, which entered into force in October, has stalled due to disputes over Hamas disarmament. He said the issue remains decisive for advancing all elements of the peace plan.
Meanwhile, Hamas rejected the report. It described it as one-sided and accused Israel of failing to meet obligations in the first phase of the ceasefire. The group also said restrictions on aid and reconstruction materials continue to worsen the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The report also states that ceasefire violations continue almost daily. It adds that living conditions in Gaza remain severe for around two million people, while reconstruction and stabilization efforts continue to face delays due to the lack of a final agreement between the parties.
