TIRANA, June 16 – Prime Minister Edi Rama gave an interview to Italian magazine Vanity Fair and journalist Nina Verdelli. The discussion covered tourism development in Albania, protests linked to proposed investment projects, European Union integration, foreign policy, and aspects of his personal and political journey.
Rama addressed criticism surrounding proposed tourism projects on Sazan Island and the Vlora coastline. According to the prime minister, Albania is not selling protected areas. He said authorities aim to develop partnerships that respect environmental standards. Sustainable high-end tourism, he argued, can coexist with environmental protection.
Meanwhile, the prime minister commented on recent protests against the projects. Some criticism stems from misinformation, he said. He also claimed that political opponents and foreign interests contribute to the debate. In addition, he urged critics to assess the projects once detailed plans become public.
The interview also focused on Albania’s European Union ambitions. Rama reaffirmed the country’s commitment to membership. According to the prime minister, Albania continues to implement the reforms required for accession. At the same time, he argued that European integration benefits both Albania and the European Union.
On regional and international issues, the discussion covered relations with Israel, the war in Ukraine, migration cooperation with Italy, and developments in the Western Balkans. Rama stressed the importance of dialogue in international relations. He also highlighted Albania’s partnerships with Western allies.
Later, the prime minister reflected on his personal life and political career. His remarks touched on his years as an artist and his return from Paris to enter public service. He also recalled his appointment as Culture Minister under Fatos Nano. In addition, he discussed the influence of family, faith, and art on his life.
Throughout the interview, Rama presented his views on governance and leadership. He also discussed the challenges of serving as prime minister while balancing public responsibilities with personal life.
