PM Rama in South Korea: Albania on difficult but clear path toward EU

TIRANA, May 20 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said South Korea stands as proof that history and culture matter, but do not alone determine the fate of nations. Rama made the remarks during the Asian Leadership Conference in South Korea.

Rama said he first visited South Korea more than two decades ago as mayor of Tirana. He described the country’s transformation as deeply moving. Meanwhile, he compared South Korea’s history with Albania’s past, saying Albania once resembled the “North Korea of Europe” during its communist isolation. He stressed that Albania now follows a different path through democratic institution-building, modernisation and progress toward the European Union. In addition, he said Albania proves that democratic institutions can emerge even when history appears unfavourable.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of cooperation and pragmatism in national development. He said South Korea and other Southeast Asian countries show that cooperation carries more strength than confrontation. He added that pragmatism can challenge ideology. At the same time, Rama reflected on his personal experience in Asia and described leadership as the courage to move forward despite uncertainty. He said Albania can draw inspiration from Asian countries in economic and social transformation.

In conclusion, Rama said South Korea’s experience demonstrates that countries can turn challenges into opportunities. He added that no one has the right to claim transformation is impossible, either collectively or individually.
