Prime Minister Edi Rama has commented on the protests against the proposed $4 billion investment project in Zvërnec, suggesting that they are driven not only by domestic concerns but also by external influences seeking to block the development.
In an interview with French television network France 24, Rama said that various international actors could be involved, including Iran and other regional countries or groups that, according to him, do not welcome Albania’s economic development.
He also noted that Albania has been engaged in a cyber conflict with Iran for several years, suggesting that this broader climate could influence political and social developments in the country.
According to Rama, the protests in the capital do not necessarily reflect the views of residents in the area where the investment is expected to be implemented. He stressed that in Vlora, unlike in Tirana, the project is viewed more positively by local residents.
Rama argued that support for the investment is stronger among people living in the region directly affected by the project, while opposition has been more visible in the capital.
