Rama from Estonia: “I Came and Brought You the Sunshine — In Albania You Will Not Find Sympathy for Putin”

Prime Minister Edi Rama, during a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, spoke about the relationship between Albania and Estonia. Rama began his speech with a few jokes, humorously saying that he had “brought the sunshine to Estonia” with his arrival.

At the same time, the Prime Minister thanked his counterpart for the hospitality and praised his willingness to support Albania.

“First of all, let me clarify something. When you came to Tirana, it was a rainy day. It was always warm, but it was rainy because Keir Starmer brought the rain from London. Today it is sunny in Tallinn because I brought the sunshine from Tirana.

Finally, I am allowed to visit this city, which I have always imagined as a laboratory of the future. I simply want to tell Estonian citizens that we have complete admiration for them because instead of continuing to live in a museum, they decided to live in the future. That makes Estonia the city on the hill, especially for a country like Albania, because we are small and we need such an example.

I must say I was very surprised to discover there is very good food here. It was not something I expected. Thank you very much for the useful conversation and for sharing with me how you successfully managed, as a country, to achieve what you call the ‘Tiger Leap’ and how you are thinking about making this second leap.

Let me tell you that with you we are not only seeking cooperation, but we are also seeking the Estonian roadmap. I am very grateful when you told me that you are ready to welcome our people to learn from you and from what you are doing in the education sector, starting with children, to give them the tools to take the country to another level.

We want to make sure that our path toward 2030 is paved with the same innovation that has made Estonia a global brand. You mentioned the Minister of Artificial Intelligence — we are very happy to introduce ours as well. On the other hand, you rightly mentioned that Estonia and Albania are united not only by NATO, but by an unwavering refusal to allow foreign powers to undermine our way of life.

Let us continue, beginning with the closing of the negotiation chapters. It is a pleasure to see the number of Estonians visiting Albania triple since 2023. I want to tell Estonians that while you leave your country in darkness, you can come to sunny Albania. So you can visit Albania even in winter.

Also, you will not find sympathy for Putin there, so you can come freely. We are extremely happy to be here and I look forward to doing more together. For a long time, you have shown that being a small country is not a limitation. Thank you for that,” Rama said.
