Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the government will not withdraw its support for two luxury resort projects linked to an investment firm associated with Jared Kushner, despite ongoing daily protests.
First, Rama stated in written comments to Bloomberg that his government will continue its tourism development strategy. He emphasized that the goal is to transform Albania into a premium tourism destination.
In addition, he said it is his responsibility to distinguish between genuine protests and political theater. He also referred to his electoral mandate, saying voters had given him a strong mandate to pursue long-term development policies.
Moreover, the projects in question are backed by Kushner’s investment company Affinity Partners. These developments have sparked public debate and protests over coastal development and investment approvals.
As a result, demonstrations have continued since late May. Protesters have demanded the cancellation of the projects and called for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Furthermore, Rama argued that opposition groups and digitally amplified campaigns are influencing public sentiment. He also suggested, without providing evidence, that foreign actors may be involved in amplifying the protests.
In addition, he defended the government’s long-term vision, known as “Albania 2030.” He said the plan is based on law, science, transparency, and European obligations rather than public pressure campaigns.
At the same time, he reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to attracting investment and protecting natural assets. He stressed that the country is steadily moving toward European Union membership.
Finally, Rama insisted that development projects will continue regardless of opposition pressure, as part of a broader strategy to expand tourism and economic growth.
