Prime Minister Edi Rama said there is no reason for concern about the Zvërnec investment project, which he described as the largest tourism investment currently planned in Europe, worth €4 billion.
Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) forum in Rome, Rama discussed Albania’s investment opportunities and strategic development plans.
Regarding the Zvërnec project, he stressed that the investors purchased private land. He also confirmed that authorities are carrying out an environmental impact assessment.
Furthermore, Rama noted that no project has received approval yet and that authorities have not issued a construction permit.
“Environmentalists have nothing to worry about at this stage,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rama highlighted Albania’s economic progress over the past decade. He recalled that when he took office, the country’s GDP stood below €10 billion and Albania welcomed around two million tourists annually.
However, he said Albania recorded a GDP of more than €27 billion last year and welcomed over 12 million visitors.
In addition, foreign direct investment increased from around €300 million to €1.6 billion during the same period.
According to Rama, these achievements have moved Albania into a new stage of economic development.
Moreover, he credited international investors, including entrepreneur Mohamed Alabbar, for helping reshape perceptions of Albania as a destination for major investments.
As a result, Albania now has the opportunity to host what Rama called Europe’s largest tourism investment.
He explained that the project aims to demonstrate how economic development and environmental protection can coexist.
Therefore, leading architects, landscape designers, and water-management engineers have joined the project.
At the same time, Rama welcomed public environmental activism. He described recent protests in defense of nature as a positive sign of social progress.
He noted that only a decade ago Albania struggled with uncontrolled hunting and weak environmental protection.
Finally, Rama said the project plans to increase green areas by 25 percent and improve the ecological condition of the lagoon. He added that developers are designing new systems to restore clean water and strengthen environmental sustainability in the area.
