Prime Minister Edi Rama, through a post on the platform X, reacted to a statement by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) regarding their report on media freedom in Albania. Rama wrote that he never said they measure government communication.
According to him, compared to other reports, the RSF report contradicts assessments regarding the relationship between the government, the media, and the public.
“I never said that you measure government communication, but now that you mention it, I’m thinking: wouldn’t it perhaps be a good idea for you to read the reports of those who actually do it, and to do so in a professional and objective way?
It might help you, because there are significant contradictions between your assessments and theirs when it comes to the relationship between the government, the media, and the public in a free country like Albania, where, contrary to what you have claimed in the past, and more than once, the Media Information Agency seems to have been a very good idea in the service of freedom of information. That’s all,” Rama wrote on X.
Regarding Rama’s post, there was also a response from RSF, accompanied by a photo, stating that Albania ranks 83rd, dropping by three places compared to last year.
RSF added that the ranking reflects political attacks, abuse of law enforcement bodies, low media transparency, and threats against journalists.
“Prime Minister Edi Rama, we measure media freedom, not government communication. Albania’s ranking at 83rd place (-3) in the 2026 Index reflects political attacks, abuse of law enforcement bodies, low media transparency, and threats against journalists,” the statement said.
