Serwer: Americans and Europeans Should Be Ashamed; They Have Criminalized a Liberation Movement They Supported

American professor and Balkan affairs expert Daniel Serwer has reacted following the guilty verdict issued by the Specialist Chambers against four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

In an opinion piece published on his website, “Peacefare.net,” Serwer said that Americans and Europeans should be ashamed for criminalizing a liberation movement they supported and for reducing international justice to political revenge.

Serwer said that it is not only the verdict that is unjust, but the entire court.

“The most immediate question is what happens in Kosovo. Many Albanians there will regard the outcome as unjust. They will protest angrily, but I hope peacefully. Violence will achieve nothing. The verdicts will please, but not fully convince, many Serbs. Some may celebrate. There too, violence will achieve nothing.

Americans and Europeans should be ashamed. They have criminalized a liberation movement they supported and reduced international justice to political revenge. But they have moved on and will not pay much attention to this. This is yet another lesson in why you should not be overly friendly with Washington and Brussels. It is not only the verdict that is unjust. The court is as well,” Serwer wrote.

Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi were each sentenced to 25 years in prison for war crimes, while Kadri Veseli was sentenced to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.
