Smart City, Demo: Around 3 billion lek allocated to technology for public security

TIRANA, Nov 4 /ATA/ The Smart City project, a strategic investment aimed at modernising public security, is among the key priorities of the Ministry of Interior’s 2027 draft budget.

Around 2 billion lek in foreign financing is earmarked for the project, alongside approximately 1 billion lek to cover VAT, as well as additional funds for supervision and local costs.

Presenting the project to the Committee on Internal Affairs and Defence, Minister Ervin Demo said the investment aims to strengthen the State Police’s technological capabilities by improving monitoring, prevention and public security management.

He stressed that technological advancement must go hand in hand with safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly personal data protection and privacy, under clear legal guarantees and institutional oversight. Technology, he said, should serve public security rather than become an end in itself.

The Smart City project aims to strengthen institutional and operational capacities by harnessing technology to improve prevention and response capabilities and ensure a safer environment for citizens.
