Speaker receives 2026 progress report, says parliament fully committed to Albania’s EU membership

TIRANA, Nov 5 /ATA/ – Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi on Thursday reaffirmed parliament’s commitment to Albania’s European Union membership bid during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Albania Sofia Moreira de Sousa, who formally presented the 2026 European Commission Progress Report.

The report assesses the implementation of reforms and Albania’s progress in EU accession negotiations, highlighting key priorities, achievements and challenges requiring further action.

Peleshi said parliament would carefully examine the report’s findings and recommendations and continue contributing to the alignment of Albanian legislation with EU standards, stronger parliamentary oversight and the advancement of accession-related reforms.

The 2026 report highlights progress in several key areas of Albania’s EU integration process, including the opening of all six negotiating clusters, covering 33 chapters, and the provisional closure of four chapters. It also acknowledges progress in judicial reform and the fight against corruption, economic growth and declining public debt, digital transformation, energy, education, science and innovation.

The report also notes Albania’s full alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and the financial support provided through the Western Balkans Growth Plan.

At the same time, it outlines priorities for further reforms, with parliament playing an important role through legislative alignment with European standards and stronger parliamentary oversight.

The Albanian Parliament remains committed to fulfilling its institutional responsibilities in support of the country’s strategic national objective of EU membership, with the aim of concluding accession negotiations by the end of 2027.
