“The End of the Golemis” premieres at National Theatre of Opera and Ballet after six decades

TIRANA, May 29 – “The End of the Golemis”, the Albanian opera by composer Nikolla Zoraqi, premiered on Thursday evening at the National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble.

The monumental Albanian work returned to the stage more than six decades after its creation. The opera brings themes of war, love, betrayal and the tragic fate of the Golemi family.

Meanwhile, the production features a libretto by Kolë Jakova. Maestro Zhani Ciko directed the orchestra, while Nikolin Gurakuqi led the stage direction. Audiences filled the theatre hall and applauded the production. Ciko described the opera as “a landmark of our creativity”.

Ciko said the opera explores a subject that Albanian theatre and opera have rarely addressed. According to him, the work focuses on the final period in the life of national hero George Kastrioti. In addition, he said the opera reflects the continuation of Albanian resistance after the hero’s death.

Before the performance, Ciko explained that the opera draws inspiration from “The Last Days of Gjorg Golemi” by writer Dhimitër Shuteriqi. He added that Jakova later transformed the story into verses and adapted it into an opera libretto before entrusting it to Zoraqi.

“The End of the Golemis” will continue performances every evening until May 31.
