TIRANA, June 15 – Travelers entering or leaving Albania must declare cash, negotiable instruments, precious metals, precious stones, valuables or antiques worth more than 10,000 euros or the equivalent in other currencies.
The measure aims to ensure transparency and prevent money laundering and the illegal transport of high-value items. Travelers make declarations at border crossing points before passport control. They complete the Border Transport of Valuables Reporting Form, which is free of charge. They also present documents that prove the origin of the funds.
Failure to declare or incorrect declarations may lead to fines and other legal measures under Albania’s Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code. First-time violations between 10,000 and 19,999 euros carry a fine of 20,000 ALL. Higher amounts carry increasing fines. These fines reach up to 50 percent of the undeclared value for sums above 50,000 euros. The rule applies to all travelers regardless of transport type, including air, sea, road or on foot, and regardless of how they carry the funds or ownership status.
