US: We Respect Verdict Against Former KLA Leaders

The United States said it respects the verdict issued by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.

Washington also called on all sides to respect the court’s decision.

“We respect today’s verdict of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson told Radio Free Europe.

The State Department said the United States supports justice for all victims and their families. It also reaffirmed its support for accountability, due process and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, Washington called on all sides to avoid inflammatory rhetoric following the verdict.

“We call on all sides to respect the court’s decision, avoid inflammatory rhetoric and continue working toward a peaceful and democratic future,” the State Department spokesperson said.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague found the four former KLA leaders guilty on four counts of war crimes. The court acquitted them of charges of crimes against humanity.

The court sentenced Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison each. It sentenced Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.

The defense lawyers said they will appeal the verdict.
