PM Rama on Student Protests: They Demand My Resignation but Refuse Dialogue

Prime Minister Edi Rama commented on the student protests in Tirana, now in their 22nd day, during an interview in Brussels on Tuesday. The head of government emphasized that protesters are refusing dialogue and insisting on calls for his resignation, without presenting a clear set of demands.

“It’s not easy to protest. What are you protesting for? We don’t want to talk to you, you have to leave. Excuse me, you didn’t give me this job. Come and let’s talk, I’m ready to listen to you. There is no dialogue, no discussion.

The heart of the matter, unlike in other countries, is that at this stage there are more people out on the streets demanding that he leave.

It’s important to understand people, not to start by pointing fingers and assigning blame, but to listen to them and understand what’s wrong and what these people really want. This is democracy, this is freedom. People have the right to do what they need to do.

The problem begins when people fail to understand that their freedom ends where someone else’s freedom begins.

Am I affected? Yes, I am, because I’m learning how to do more and how to do it better. Albania is doing very well when it comes to tourism figures and economic growth, its path toward the EU, and many other things. But on the other hand, people want more from what the economy generates,” Rama said.
