TIRANA, April 14 – President Bajram Begaj met North Macedonia Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi in Tirana and focused on bilateral relations and the rights of Albanians. He placed particular emphasis on language rights and institutional representation.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed cooperation between the two countries. They also discussed challenges facing Albanians in North Macedonia, including fair representation and protection of acquired rights.
At the centre of the discussion stood the status of the Albanian language. Begaj said the Ohrid Framework Agreement and the law on adequate representation require full implementation, not debate.
He then addressed recent student protests. Albanian law students in North Macedonia have demanded the right to sit exams in their native language.
In response, Begaj urged a solution to their request. He called on Gashi to support measures that guarantee this right through clear legal mechanisms.
He also stressed the role of Albanians as a state-forming community in North Macedonia. He said stable coexistence depends on mutual respect and institutional guarantees.
Moreover, he argued that rights must rest on binding legal frameworks. He said such guarantees strengthen the country’s path towards European Union integration.
Beyond bilateral issues, the discussion also covered the Albanian diaspora. Begaj described it as a vital force that supports national development and cohesion.
Finally, he underlined the need for unity among Albanian political actors. He said coordinated action remains essential to protect rights and advance common interests.
