Peleshi: Parliament Plays Key Role in Albania’s EU Path

Albania launched the “EU for Democracy” project at Parliament in Tirana. The European Union program aims to strengthen Parliament’s role in Albania’s EU integration process.

Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi joined EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato and International IDEA Regional Director Sam van der Staak at the presentation ceremony.

Peleshi called the project an important step toward modernizing parliamentary services and strengthening Parliament’s legislative and oversight work.

He said the program will increase transparency, improve cooperation with civil society and the media, and accelerate Albania’s EU integration.

Peleshi stressed that Albania stands closer than ever to EU membership.

He highlighted the fast pace of negotiations and strong public support for integration.

Peleshi said Parliament has already approved 23 laws linked to the negotiation process, especially in the area of rule of law.

Gonzato said EU reforms will improve transparency, strengthen the management of public funds, guarantee better public services, and protect citizens’ rights.

He stressed that Albania needs a strong, transparent, and inclusive Parliament to advance reforms and prepare for EU membership.

Van der Staak underlined the importance of institutional cooperation and the active involvement of civil society and the media in democratic reforms.

International IDEA implements the project with EU funding.

The initiative aims to strengthen Parliament’s institutional capacities, improve legislative quality, and expand transparency and inclusiveness in parliamentary work.
