Infrastructure Minister Karakaçi: Government approves fuel subsidy for public transport operators

TIRANA, May 13 – The Albanian government approved a new subsidy scheme for public transport operators following higher fuel prices. The measure provides 50 lek per litre of fuel for transport companies.

After the government meeting, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi said the subsidy covers urban, intercity and suburban transport operators. He described the measure as part of the government response to the fuel crisis.

Turning to the decision, Karakaçi said the government approved several acts linked to the infrastructure and energy sector. He added that the transport subsidy represents one of the key support measures introduced during the hydrocarbons crisis.

Earlier, government representatives met transport associations, municipal officials and the Ministry of Economy to discuss sector concerns. Karakaçi said authorities pledged support during those talks and later approved the compensation scheme.

In addition, he said all public transport companies will receive compensation of 50 lek per litre of fuel. He added that the subsidy will apply retroactively from March, when the fuel price crisis began affecting the sector.

Overall, Karakaçi said the government fulfilled commitments agreed with interest groups. The measure aims to ease pressure on transport operators and support continuity in public transport services.
