Opposition Democratic Party MP calls for special national status for Albanian Film Archive

TIRANA, May 25 – Democratic Party of the opposition MP Ina Zhupa, chair of the Committee on Culture, Tourism and Diaspora, visited the National Film Archive of Albania.

Zhupa called for stronger institutional attention and concrete government support for the archive. She described it as a key institution for preserving Albanian national identity.

Meanwhile, she praised work on collecting and restoring private archives. She mentioned the archive of Guri Koti as an example that enriches national memory.
Zhupa said the institution needs urgent government intervention. She called for a special national status for the National Film Archive. She also said film and folklore materials should be protected as national assets and included in international protection programmes, including UNESCO.

In addition, Zhupa said staff should regain hazard pay linked to working conditions. She said workers operate in environments with dust, old film materials, and chemicals used in restoration.

Zhupa also said Albania should develop a national film restoration centre. She said restoration should take place inside the country. She said this would require investment in staff and technology and could position Albania as a regional hub.

At the same time, she said the archive’s funding should be managed directly by the institution. She said this would strengthen autonomy and improve protection of archival material.
