TIRANA, May 29 – Ambassador of Germany to Albania Karl Bergner said at an event that an independent, professional and efficient justice system remains a central and necessary condition for Albania’s progress toward European Union membership. He added that meeting the interim benchmarks for accession, recently confirmed, represents recognition of achievements so far in this field. He also said it reflects the work of the negotiating team and encourages further reforms and the consistent implementation of the 2016 justice reform.
Bergner stated that the reform remains irreversible. At the same time, he said the system must continue to strengthen. Earlier, he noted that a new nationwide survey sheds light on how Albanian citizens perceive the justice reform, since they are its main beneficiaries.
The remarks came during the presentation of a national survey on the justice system in Albania. Dr. Eduard Zaloshnja presented the findings at the event. The study was carried out for the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Governance. The German Embassy provided funding for the research.
In addition, the German Embassy welcomed the authors of the study. It expressed hope that the findings will serve as guidance for further reforms.
