Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania must not let major tourism opportunities slip away again. He stressed that the country has already lost important chances in the past and should not repeat the same mistakes.
Speaking at the Socialist Party’s 35th anniversary event in Elbasan, Rama referred to the tourism project in Tivat, Montenegro. He said Albania could have hosted the same investment and transformed its tourism sector.
Furthermore, he argued that if the project had been built in Albania, it would have changed the country’s economic position. He claimed it could have helped Albania lead the region in wages and pensions through tourism development.
In addition, Rama defended luxury tourism projects. He said resorts and hotels drive economic growth and strengthen the national economy.
“They are engines of the economy, of the country and of the people who live in it,” he said.
Moreover, he explained that such investments generate demand for local goods and services. As a result, farmers and businesses increase production and improve their sales.
He also referred to the “Porto Montenegro” project in Tivat. He said the investment was originally planned for Durrës but was eventually developed in Montenegro instead.
Consequently, Rama noted that Tivat was transformed from a low-income, underdeveloped port into a major tourist destination. He added that the city now receives millions of visitors annually and has created many quality jobs for young people.
Finally, Rama urged Albania to act decisively and protect future opportunities. He emphasized that strategic tourism investments are essential for economic growth, employment, and long-term national development.
